Have you ever watched a speaker and said, “Wow, I wish I could speak like that”? or “That person was just so wonderful. I could never do that.” Well, I’ve got some good news for you. You too can be a public speaker. Public speaking is a learned skill, so anyone can do it. You just need to follow some simple steps and practice, practice, practice. If you know how to talk, you can become a public speaker.

Becoming really good at public speaking requires some risk, but you have been taking risks all your life. When you were a toddler, you risked falling down when you took your first steps. You risk scraping your knees or falling when you start roller blading. You risk falling off when you start bike riding. You risk being rejected when you ask someone out on a date, and you risk getting into an accident every time you drive your car.

If you gave up after your first fall, you’d still be crawling. If you were afraid to fall off your bike, you’d still be riding with training wheels. If you were afraid of getting into an accident, you’d never get behind the wheel of a car. And guess what, you’re still here - you’ve survived all of that. You’re risk takers!! You’ve proved that by coming to Toastmasters. The greatest fear is that of public speaking and here you are - wanting to learn how to do it.

How many of you enjoy watching figure skating? Now, you wouldn’t expect to be a world class figure skater the minute you put on a pair of skates, would you? No, you’d expect to have to practice for years before becoming that good. Nor would you expect to make the NHL without years and years of winter and summer hockey.

How many of you enjoy watching racing? Would you expect to be another Mario Andretti the minute you get behind the wheel? Now, I will admit that there seem to be a few drivers out there who think they are Mario, but most people would expect to have to practice for years before reaching his status.

Now, I think everyone here knows how to walk. When you think of walking 25 miles, it seems like a long distance, but it is actually only putting one foot in front of the other a number of times and you know how to do that. It just takes practice to go the distance. It’s the same thing with public speaking. It just takes putting one word after another.

The key to getting up in front of an audience is believing that you have something to share with them that may make a difference in their lives - by entertaining them, warning them, encouraging them, or giving them direction or information.

The great thing is - you all do have something to say that people would be interested in hearing. Each of you has come through life in a different way. You may have encountered difficult circumstances and survived. Your experience could help someone else in the same situation.

If you remember jokes or enjoy telling stories to your friends, practice a little more and soon you can be telling your jokes and stories to large audiences. If you are really good at something, consider sharing the steps of how you got there.

By following the steps outlined in the Toastmasters’ manuals, and with the encouragement of fellow Toastmasters, you can learn how to craft a speech and how to deliver it. You can learn how to use props, how to modulate your voice, and how to use words that your audience will understand.

You will often hear the words “stage time” used by Toastmasters. That is the only way to get better. In order to be good at anything, you have to practice. Winston Churchill overcame a speech impediment to become a master orator. He had to practice for hours to deliver a speech.

You can get very discouraged if you expect to be as good as Zig Ziglar right away. But if you listen to his story, you will find that it took a very long time before he was able to do what he does so well.

The thing to remember is that the only person you need to compare yourself to is you. You are working for your personal best, so when you are preparing your speech and practicing, all you need to ask yourself is - is your second speech better in some way than your first? Did you learn something new as you prepared for your speech? Did you learn something from the evaluative comments of others after you gave your speech? Then, that’s all you need to do. You can use what you’ve learned to make the next speech your best to date and then use the same process for each speech you give. Just take one step at a time.

Remember, public speaking is a skill, so anyone can learn to do it. You just need to be taught how and then practice, practice, practice. Then one day someone may watch you and say, “Wow, I wish I could speak like that.”

The main reason webmasters fail to make their websites accessible is because they don’t understand the concept of an “accessible website” in the first place.

Lets admit it, when the buzzword accessibility flies about over the web most of us think “I know what accessibility is, its making my website usable by anyone with a disability” if that’s you, I have bad news, you’ve fell at the first hurdle. Yes I’ll put my hand up and say this is part of accessibility but at most it only amounts to half of the meaning.

What accessibility actually means is “can all users get the information they need from my site as quick and as simply as possible?” if you can answer yes to this question, well done, you have an accessible site, if not you need to know how to make your website accessible, which is what the remainder of this article will look at by pointing out how sites aren’t accessible:

A Splash Screen/intro - If you have a splash screen or intro on your site its not accessible and I haven’t even seen your actual content yet, its not accessible because I cant get the information I want from your site - splash screens are pointless and above all annoying, 9 times out of 10 if a site has a splash screen the browser is closed before even looking for the skip into button.

Use of anything but X/HTML & a CSS to make your website - it has been proven time and time again that the best websites are built on the bread and butter of web design - HTML and a CSS so why change something that isn’t broken? You may have fancy JavaScript and the like on your website and (hopefully) that looks very pretty but what if I don’t have the appropriate plug-in to play your pretty applets? That’s right! I can’t get the information I want from your site thus your site is inaccessible.

Use of “mystery meat” navigation - Does your site have linked images that lead to another page on your site? Do these images have any indication of where the person clicking on this link is going? If you answered no to both of theses questions your website is inaccessible to everyone. If an image is linked it should ONLY lead to a bigger version of that image, id rather have a boring list of text links than loads of images that don’t tell me where I’m going to end up if I click on them.

So in theory, if you dont have any of the above on your site and your content is something someone else wants to know about then you should have a good website.

Planning and organizing a wedding budget can greatly reduce the stress of putting together a wedding. The very thought of a wedding conjures up images of finery and elegance, music and dance, fun, frolic and lavish spreads. However, all the extravagance can really add up. So, whatever the size and style of the wedding, one cannot underestimate the importance of a wedding budget.

Getting started on the wedding budget

You need to determine who is paying for the wedding. Traditionally, the bride’s parents sponsored the entire wedding. This no longer holds true. So put your heads together and decide who is paying for what.

What is the total wedding budget?

Once you know who is paying for what, you also need to calculate the total wedding budget. Calculate all the income that you intend to spend on the wedding. You need to include the groom’s contribution, the bride’s contribution and contributions from both sets of parents if any.

Also, sometimes family and friends may choose to sponsor a part of the wedding like the honeymoon or the decoration or the cake. Ensure that you ask the persons sponsoring, how much they want to spend and stay within their budget. If you want to go a little over the budget they have allocated, you must bear the cost.

Set priorities

Before you start allocating the resources to different items, you need to set priorities. Is it important for you to invite everyone you know or is it more important for you to have a grand wedding? If you absolutely have to invite the 200 odd people you know, then you may need to choose a cheaper venue and think of having a cocktail reception instead of a dinner or luncheon reception. If you have your heart set on a lavish wedding, then cut back on the number of guests to stay within budget.

Maintain a notebook

Don’t even think of having a wedding budget and sticking to it without putting it all on paper. Weddings have a tendency to get out of hand real quick. Write down your wedding budget, the breakup of the wedding budget and how you intend to spend it and the actual expenditure in a single notebook. Maintaining a wedding budget book will help you track all the expenditure easily. In case you start to overshoot, you can immediately takes steps to amend it.

You can even maintain a wedding budget online. There are many wedding websites that enable you to maintain a wedding budget online. It is a simple, efficient and effective solution to your problems.

Ask family and friends for help

If you have a small wedding budget ask family and friends for cash gifts instead of the regular chinaware. It will make things easier for them as well as you.

Planning a wedding is an effort in itself and staying within the wedding budget is positively an art, but with a little know-how you can do it and you’ll be glad you did!

“Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it” (Genesis 28:16).

How easy it is to forget that God is in this place, right where we are, especially if we are discontented where we are. The Almighty God can be found in the most illogical places. Why not, for He is omnipresent. When we least feel His presence, that is when He is most likely to be with us. Even Jesus thought His Father had deserted Him and cried out, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34, Psalm 22:1). The Son was eclipsed by the overwhelming evil, only to shine brightest after earth’s darkest hour!

Who has not exclaimed, “My God, My God, where are you?” in the anguish of a dark hour of loss and hopelessness? But it was at that very agonizing moment that Jesus fulfilled His mission and, in our least likely and most hurting moments, we may be crying out to our Father who is already there and is covering our ruptured hearts with His healing promise of wholeness once again. O! let us claim and believe in our most doubting moments His greatness and His love and, above all, His presence.

As we look back over the critical junctures of our lives, we see that it was then that our priorities were rearranged and the results, we hope, became God’s will for us. But we can hardly be expected to appreciate the fire that is burning off the dross or the dent in our shoulder from struggling with our cross until we see the finished product. But, as we review our life, we realize that the heavier part of the cross was carried by Jesus and our burden was and is made lighter because of His love.

Yes, the Lord is in this place of anger turned to kindness, pride turned to humility, bitterness turned to gentleness, gossip turned to intercession, doubt turned to trust, ingratitude turned to acknowledgment, and malice turned to love. May we practice the presence of our God who loves and cares, no matter where we are and no matter what the overwhelming circumstances are, for they can never overwhelm our God.

The inspiration for this article comes from an Old Testament story. In this story there is a special building project undertaken by Solomon. The four stages explained in this article are the exact same steps illustrated in this story. You will find that these four concepts will dramatically help you in your music ministry. You need to take this information and start creating an overwhelming positive worship experience in your church’s worship service.

This is where we begin - One day as I was reading the Bible I came across and amazing scripture. Solomon’s temple was completed and the priests were ministering and then God’s glory filled the temple. The awe and reverence caused everyone to stop and let God inhabit the worship.

Looking back I realized that there was a lot of hard work and preparation that needed to happen. The nation Israel needed to come together and build the temple. It all started with a vision from David. He desired to build a temple that was worthy for God. But, he could not because he shed too much blood in his lifetime. The torch was past on to his son Solomon.

Then I noticed that there was a distinct pattern regarding the various stages of the project. And the pattern fits no matter what kind of building project you start. I want to show you how it applies to your music ministry.

The metaphor of building a house is appropriate in the fact that it gives you a visual model to help understand how to build your music ministry. And you can apply this basic principle to make vast improvements in the way you minister to the people you serve.

With all this in mind let us look at the four major steps toward building an awesome music ministry.

There are basically four major milestones whenever a building project is undertaken. These four milestones insure the success of the project. You can take these proven principles and apply them to your ministry.

Here are the four major areas..

1) Have a Blueprint to guide your course.

You need to know and understand the final outcome. You need to determine the real purpose and goal for doing what you do. A blueprint will help guide and direct your path. The benefit of doing this is you will be able to predict the outcome with a great deal of accuracy. You will have a roadmap and compass that will guide you though the process. You will be able to make adjustments to the way you are doing things now.

2) Build on a Solid Foundation

Obviously, a solid foundation is perhaps the most important aspect of a building. As a Christian you must stand on a good foundation. You need a relationship with God that is built on truth. And you need to nurture that relationship. A Solid Foundation insures that you get off to a positive start. A weak foundation can only end up in ruin.

3) Build the house using the right tools

Whenever a carpenter, mason, contractor builds a house the success of that project depend on having the right tools to build the house. As someone who uses music to minister to the people you serve, it is important that you have the right tools also. There are several factors that will help improve you presentation and delivery of the message you are responsible to give. You need to be skillful in the things you do. Remember it is God who is working through you. God is not mediocre and neither should you. After all you need to realize that Christ dwell in you. With the right tools you can dramatically improve your ministry.

4) Moving into the house.

When Solomon’s temple was completed and the people began to worship and amazing event took place that is nothing short of phenomenal. God’s glory filled the temple. I truly believe that when God is in the midst of our worship it is nothing short of amazing. I think you will agree with me that when everyone is in the right frame of mind and heading in the same direction, with the blessing of the Lord, nothing is impossible. Include having the Creator inhabit the praises of His people.

What makes this process better is that it is based on solid Biblical principles. These principles have proven to be the best way to start and fulfill the commission. It is illustrated by the awesome task undertaken by Solomon to build the Temple. Scripture further reinforces it. Furthermore, what makes it better is that is simple. Have you ever noticed that the most profound things in life are often rooted is simple easy to understand ideas. I feel that I was blessed to share this information to help build the body of Christ. My vision is to see as many people as possible experience the moment when God’s Glory fills the temple. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.

A B’nai Mitzvah Speech

Dear Jill and John, Thank you for showing us the relevance of Terumah. Your
commentary is filled with insight …and it brings special life to this most special day
of your B’nai Mitzvah.

Your Mom and I wish you a heartfelt Mazel Tov - only good luck for the two of you
over a long and joyous life. That’s what we want for you.

Since you blessed us with your arrival some thirteen year ago, you have brought
immeasurable happiness into our lives. Watching you grow up…from delightful
children into marvelous young adults..has been an altogether life-affirming
experience. We thank you deeply for all that you are..and all that you continue to
mean to us over these years. We look forward to the future with a strong sense of
confidence and brightness.

Today, of course, is your B’nai Mitzvah - and you did a beautiful job of reading -
and interpreting - your Torah portions. No one understands more than your mom
and I how your wonderful performance today is the result of years of diligent study.
You have continually showed admirable willingness to learn. Your depth of
commitment and responsibility has been enormous. And today all that effort
showed itself beautifully. You have every right to feel enormous pride in yourselves.
I know I feel great pride in all that you have done.

I’m still thinking about your commentary on Terumah, and the way you reminded us
of how relevant the Torah continues to be - in every day of our lives. In the process
of illuminating Terumah, you brought special life to this ceremony. You made your
B’nai Mitzvah come alive for all of us.

Considering your words on Terumah, the ones that resonate the most with me are
those in which you described a new Jewish nation, freshly conceived and born of
newly freed slaves - ones who for so long had nothing - and ones who, now, were
asked to give up their newly-acquired possessions — all to make a special place, a
tabernacle, for G-d.

How remarkable this is! A nation just freed from misery and poverty…became a
nation that is defined by sharing and kindness. How wonderfully divine! And how
incredibly encompassing of the best of human nature! This is precisely why Torah -
and its teachings - will continue to stand the test of time. And why Torah readings,
like yours today on this day of your B’nai Mizvah, bear such wonderful, timelss
meaning.

Jill…John..just know that the love your mother and I feel for you is as eternal as the
teachings of Torah. We are SO grateful to have children like you..children who
continue to make us proud because of your achievements in the classroom, on the
athletic field..and in the content of your character.

John, you make me proudest of all because I see how you understand the value of
friendship and compassion. How you invite your friends into our home wih such
ease and comfort..and how you instill the same in them when they visit with us. Son,
I remember as well, an episode of a few years back, when that young boy from
Korea, I think his name was Sam moved into our neighborhood. He could barely
speak English. He must have felt so ill at ease. But YOU took the time, and made the
effort, both in and out of school, to make this young man comfortable in his new
environment. You befriended him…and it was a beautiful thing to watch.

Jill…our pride in you is centered upon your incredible sense of the importance of
family. Your mom and I have noted it so often..in so many ways. For instance, all
those times when you would forego your own activities, sacrifice your own time to
travel wtih John and be there when he played in important baseball tournaments.
Your support really helped your brother. And it meant the world to us to see it.

It’s wonderful and appropriate that your Torah portion was Terumah - all about
giving unselfishly. Because that’s precisely what the two of you do so naturally, and
so purely. We know that you will continue to give in this way all throughout your
long, healthy, love-filled lives. And in the proces of giving as such, you will receive a
great deal of love and compassion in return. Kids..you deserve it.

I wish to end my statement with one last note of celebration and heartfelt
satisfaction. I refer to my father, Sheldon Roemer. Dad is a holocaust survivor, one
who endured almost 5 years of that which is truly unendurable.

Dad, the fact that you are here now, celebrating the B’nai Mitzvah of your
grandchildren, speaks volumes for your strength, for your love of life, for your will
to survive. I can’t tell you how grateful I am for all that you have been, and all that
you have meant to me over these years.

To say “thank you”, to say anything at all, is hardly enough to express my love and
admiration for you. Just know how thrilled I am for this day, a day when my father,
an ultimate survivor, and my children, have cause to celebrate together. To all,
Shabbat Shalom…and thank you for sharing this occasion with us.
