Playing with Tourists

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

If you’ve ever been to a Brick and Mortar casino, you’ll have realized something immediately if you’re an astute observersationalist in terms of poker and gambling in general. The majority of players that come in have a certain mindset. That mindset: “Ok, I have x amount of money to lose.”

And you’ll run into these people on the online poker tables, on the blackjack tables, and on every other game at the casino. People there just to lose their money. Hell they’ve budgeted it so they won’t miss it when it’s gone.

So what does this mean for you at the card table? Well if you can wait for the premiums and the nuts, you only have to play about 3 or 4 hands to gain a few stacks in your bankroll. These games are soft.

I use the term tourist to refer to people who play poker online recreationally. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just that more serious players love to see them. When someone has the mindset of losing, then they usually lose.

Here are a few ways to spot a tourist. They love to get involved in a lot of hands. They live to call, calling stations to the nth degree. And they don’t fold. No, it’s all about that miracle card that busts your AA or your nut flush with a straight flush. But don’t worry if you run into one of these, they can be very profitable. All you have to do is wait on that premium hand, raise, hit the nuts on a safe board, and push. They’ll love to call. And you’ll love the newly OPM you’ve gotten. Oh, OPM, that’s other people’s money.

Keep it up Beat to Keep Your Winnings up

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Poker is one of the few games on the casino online where you actually play against other poker online players and people instead of the house. This is why there is the whole culture of reading poker tells to give you the edge. Unlike most other online poker games, the mathematical properties of the game do not automatically favor the house. If you are pitted against other people, then, how should you maximize your winnings? What can you do to keep your winnings up? This article is more about what you should not do than what you should do. The one golden rule at the poker table is not to be a downer. This means don’t get upset about your bad beats. Don’t blame the other players if you don’t do well. Don’t do anything to limit the enjoyment that the other players can have when they play poker. You start really impeding the fun of other players when you go on an emotional spiral at the poker table. It doesn’t matter how you think your game is going, you need to keep it upkeep. Cash or Credit?

Monday, January 4th, 2010

If all poker games boil down to money on the poker table, it is of the utmost importance to talk about what kind o money is actually on the felt. We are far more used to framing this debate in terms of the online vs. cash poker game schism, but it is worthwhile to look at the monetary differences to find the truth. Cash games are exactly what they claim to be; poker games where the currency exchanged is actual tangible, cold hard cash. The beauty of the cash game is that your winnings can be immediately spent after the game. You can walk away anytime you like with no minimum deposit level. Online games are a whole different matter. Instead of foldable money on the table, currency is elusive credit card transactions. The problem with credit cards is that the players can always abscond form paying. The casino is left with the proverbial short end of the stick. To make up for the problems of credit, most casinos will require players to achieve a minimum balance before withdrawing. In some cases, they may even require that your winnings go straight back onto the credit card you used. Choosing your currency system shapes the way that you perceive and manage your winnings. So choose cash or credit wisely.

‘Lighting Up’ to Go up in Smoke - Part One

Monday, January 4th, 2010

With a smoking ban possibly around the corner in many states, it’s important that you start thinking now about how to make your bingo hall as welcoming as possible to customers who smoke. We all know that many bingo players smoke, and player retention should be your absolute first priority.

What can bingo halls do now to keep their regulars coming around in the future? A few simple steps can help make sure your devoted players are still chomping at the bit to yell ‘Bingo!’ in your hall.

1. Educate the Smokers at Your Bingo

If a smoking ban should pass in your area, be sure that the smokers at your bingo understand exactly what’s going to happen. Talk to them about what will and won’t be allowed. Most importantly, let them know how important they are to your bingo and what steps you will be taking to make them as comfortable as possible. Explain to them that, if they have any suggestions on how to better accommodate them, you’d be pleased to hear them.

2. If Allowed, Create a Comfortable Smoking Area Outside Your Bingo Hall

Make your smokers as comfortable as possible within the confines of the law. They will appreciate a place that makes them feel welcome.

If you can legally create an enclosed smoking space, then do so, and don’t skimp. If possible, consider adding amenities that address heat, air conditioning, and the overall comfort of your bingo players. Find a way to let your smokers order food, drinks, additional bingo paper or other bingo supplies from the smoking area. Without being unnecessarily extravagant, make your smoking area as lavish as possible.

If the rules don’t permit an enclosed smoking area, then at least make sure there is a covered space, such as a gazebo, available to them. Smokers aren’t going to want to stand in the rain. You should also purchase a couple of outdoor ashtrays (some of which can hold up to 14,000 cigarette butts), and a covered trashcan or two for those who want to throw away their empty cigarette packs and drinks.

Make sure your smoking area is well-lit and away from the entrance to your bingo. You also want to add some outdoor speakers, so your players can hear the bingo caller and any announcements. Be sure that they can easily know what’s going on so they won’t miss out on any of the bingo fun!

Good Run, Bad Mistakes

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Poker players on a good run often make bad mistakes. When luck seems to be on your side hand after hand, it gets easier to believe you are invincible and your playing gets too loose. One pitfall that arises from good online poker runs is becoming too lax about going up against strong players.

There are always some players at the table who are weaker than others, and there are smart players who play a tight, deceptive and aggressive game. It is the weaker players that you should seek to target not the sharp ones. Do not go up against strong players when you are holding marginal hands.

When you see a strong player take a bad beat, don’t immediately conclude that this player has lost his winning edge or that you can draw out on him too. Remember, your run of good luck is a great thing that can change any minute. A strong smart player is probably not going to suddenly change into a vulnerable weak one.

Good online poker runs can also send your ego running amuck. Keep your ego in check, acknowledge that the combination of luck with skill and discipline is paying off for you, and then stick to your usual discipline. Do not challenge strong players unnecessarily just to reinforce you ego.

Electronic Bingo More and More a Necessity in Today’s Bingo Game

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Many charity bingos have been selling electronic handhelds (or electronic bingo) to their bingo players for years. However, there are still a minority of bingo games out there that for one reason or another have yet to offer them. We feel that this is a mistake. For locations where they are legal, electronic bingo has become a staple for almost every profitable bingo.

For those of you who don’t know (and that number is dwindling every day), electronic bingo allows bingo players to play cards electronically. Players have cards loaded into handheld units similar to large calculators and play these alongside their bingo paper books .
Initially popular in mainly the larger commercial halls, even players in small towns are now embracing the fun of electronic bingo. Smaller bingos have caught on and are now bringing the excitement to their players.

Players that want electronics must spend a little extra for the privelage, and that’s where the charities benefit. It’s not uncommon for bingos using electronics to make $100’s more in profit per bingo session. Player’s love them and frequently demand them. Today, the electronic handheld has become just as important as bingo paper and other bingo game supplies

Jerry K., chairperson of the Elks 113 in our hometown, stated these words to me awhile back “If not for electronic bingo, our bingo would have closed the doors. We were barely scraping by and now our attendance is growing and we’re making good money. I don’t know how any bingo will be able to survive in the future without them.”

With no upfront costs & no risk (you’re charged a fee only if you rent a unit to a bingo player), more and more bingo managers across country are enjoying the increased profits and player fun that electronics offer.

Intermediate Bowling Hints: Avoid the Used Bowling Equipment

Monday, July 27th, 2009

I always run into a social bowler eager to treat your neighborhood bowling league with improved precision and consistency. Since this is your calling, you’re in the midsts of a major time in growing as a serious bowler. This introduction to A Bowler’s Development is for you. Professionals at a nearby bowling pro shop want bowlers harness bowling talent. Just like a lot of sports, aim the balls at the pins and let them roll. That’s a joke. Fine, bowling is a simple game with not-so simple details. It’s all good, with a little guidance we’ll make sure you’re rolling down the right lane.

No use putting it off, buy your own custom fit bowling balls, bowling ball bags, and shoes needed to do this right. Fit is important. I promise, have your own ball drilled for custom finger holes, and your game will benefit. A brand name drilled bowling ball can make a substantial improvement in your game. It’s also important you’re having comfortable bowling shoes which smell fresh, look good and help your foot work.

Since you already found your supplies, here’s the second best piece of bowling advice: taking aim. As you face the pins, try not to focus on your actual target, the pins. Use the arrows like a sling shot. Ever noticed them? It is easier to roll through a mark a good deal nearer. For it to work right, include it as part of your routine to begin your approach at the same position on the floor every approach. Roll from the same place, in the same way and you can perfect your aim using the arrows in the lane.

What do you make of hooks, for specific action on the pins? That’s our next best piece of bowling advice. The secret is the pricy reactive ball. Many professional bowlers carry several types of bowling balls to roll aggressive pin action, selected precisely for where they are. But greenhorns might want to avoid putting on a show, and steer clear of a ball that weighs a ton. Many serious bowlers use bowling balls made for extra expert grip. Steer clear of them, because these pro bowling balls can make even decent bowlers seem like they don’t know what they’re doing. That’s our first 3 bowling tips. Rest assured you’ll find next month.

My family and I roll strikes for Team “Pindemonium” for the guys and gals at our company’s department of communications just outside Kansas City. I provide advice to all bowlers online and in my local newsletter. Also, I gotta plug all my heavy rollers back home. Roll on!

Playing through the Steam

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Though knowing when you aren’t on your A poker game is important, also important is pushing onward through a cloudy time in your game. Taking one beat, or several in a row, can be enough to put any player into a tailspin, but keeping your head on your shoulders and giving yourself a chance to win can make all the difference when it comes to managing your bankroll. Say you’ve just taken a couple of bad beat at a loose poker online table, getting sucked out or taking a cold ream of cards that does nothing more than make you want to stand up and never see another poker chip again: we’ve all been there, and we’ve all walked away from tables knowing we would just give it all away if we stayed seated there even one more second. If you can push through that moment, though, and still play poker online rightly, knowing you’ll end up right in the long run, you enter a phase of the game that separates the men from the boys. Looking back, there have been so many times where I busted hard before things clicked and I ended up winning a lot of money. Poker is mostly a game about feel. You need to be able to go with your gut, not only in reads, but in situations of saving or losing money.

Bong Smoking Guide

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Breathing Out

Often first timers exhale directly back into the bong, after sucking in. This of course is a fatal mistake to make as it will push the water back up the pipe giving you wet smoke.

Carbs

This is a good way to begin smoking if you are new, remove the reservoir from the pipe, thus exposing the tube to the outside air pressure, this allows you to inhale easier. This will result in a better high.

Please note: Some plastic bongs will have this aperture separate from the tube.

Packing the Bong

When packing the bowl it’s important to consider:

  • How much a person usually smokes? You don’t want your friends passed out after a few puffs!
  • The quality of smoke? If the smoke is really good you will not need much, if its low quality, pack it in!
  • How many are sharing? it’s dead boring having to wait an eternity for the hookah pipe to go round because it is over packed every round.
  • Is there enough stuff available? How much time are you smoking for? It isn’t easily available and it sucks running out! If your supplies are low, reduce the amount used accordingly.
  • Are you the host? Ask how much people want in each bowl Some people can get upset.

Golden Rules

Never knock over the bong, the water will stink for hours perhaps even weeks. Don’t forget, if you break the hookah pipe you will be in trouble! It doesn’t matter how much you breathe in, always treat the water pipe with respect!

Finish your load, you will know when it’s finished. The bong will be empty and the pipe is smokeless. Never waste any!
