A Beginner’s Guide to Setting up Your First Web Site

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Deciding on the best domain name and figuring out the most desirable registration are the initial matters to consider when you are establishing a Web site. Nonetheless, this isn’t a simple decision. All things considered, the easiest method of making sure that all your needs are met is to conduct some painstaking elementary research. When you read domain hosting reviews, how to determine what exactly is helpful information and what is not? Naturally, as with all informed business decisions, you must decide what characteristics are significant to your Web site. Numerous businesses prefer to get their Web pages hosted by the same company they employ for their domain name registration. Support is an issue which can affect your Web site even long after your domain is registered. Any feedback published on that company’s Web site simply isn’t sufficient to base your decision on. It’s important to obtain an objective assessment before you make a choice. You must look at as much customer feedback as is possible and give some thought to the reviewers’ feedback. Do you find any problems repeated more frequently than you would expect? What are the company’s good points? Is the overall feedback positive or negative?

Make a point of reading positive and negative client reviews for each provider. It’s usually best to gain access to all reviews with an open mind and take everything into consideration. No doubt, the significance of price should not be overlooked, but see to it you have all you may need included in your package. To follow are a few questions to investigate when choosing the most suitable hosting for your company.

During what times of day do the company offer customer support? Is there a toll-free number, and can you determine from the review Web site whether or not they have got a good response time? How much bandwidth and domain hosting does the company provide? Some businesses offer unlimited domain hosting and bandwidth as part of a package, and at times you could be entitled to other rewards like computer software and a variety of discounts. What payment options are extended? Are all payments automatic, and are monthly payments accepted? What sort of technical support is provided in the event of a server going down? In the long run this is a decision only you can make, even so do use caution, take a bit of time to read the reviews. Reading some domain hosting reviews is usually a vital way to save time and money.

Web Marketing Benefits from SEO Experience

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Web marketing has passed through many trends in the last 15 years. Some once dominant marketing practices have now been reserved for the use of well-monied “brand building” campaigns. And whereas in the old days of Web marketing more emphasis was placed on brand, now the majority of marketing efforts focus on acquiring converting traffic — visitors to Websites who perform a desired action.

Specialists in the science of SEO theory help marketers promote their Websites through carefully orchestrated search results. When consumers type informational queries into major search engines like Ask, Bing, Google, and Yahoo! SEO theory helps marketers capture the attention of consumers most likely to make a purchase.

Search engine optimization calls for careful research into the probable queries people will use to find specific products and services. Called “keyword research”, this practice has been reduced to a few cookie-cutter techniques thta have to be updated every year or two due to changes in search engine tools and query analysis. But real SEO theory relies on more stable, advanced research methods that bring the science of demographics and interests to query-based marketing. Through the use of trends analysis and pattern matching, SEO theory helps the marketer understand where the market interests are shifting.

The data most people have access to leave much to be desired because the resources are so crude. Take, for example, Google’s keyword research tool. It reveals what people are searching for only on Google (not other search engines) but it lacks the ability to filter out automated rank-checking queries. Good SEO theory holds that natural queries comprise only a subset of the reported queries that most SEO try to monitor.

In the highly competitive world of search engine optimization it makes little sense to follow the tips and advice of people who merely repeat the advice and tips that have been shared for years. The SEO community has worn out these tricks through overuse and made them less effective. Search engine optimization theory argues that Web marketing should avoid the mainstream practices simply because they are inefficient and less effective than fundamental principles.

Aboard The Broadband-Wagon

Monday, September 7th, 2009

‘Broadband’ is the general term used to refer to high-speed information transmission over networks, and nowadays is used increasingly to mean a fast Internet connection.

The term has more to do with the electrical waveform (’signal’) being transmitted. The signal can come to you through a variety of physical arrangements: a DSL line, a T1 line, a TV cable, a wireless link and even your utility power line.

Which physical arrangement is best for you depends a great deal on what is available in your geographical area and the price of each arrangement. You should do a comparison of speeds and costs and choose what is optimal for you. Just be sure you do not choose an ISDN line (because it is getting obsolete) or power line (because the technology is not mature, and it will be some years before the bugs are ironed out).

Live in a large city and want free wireless broadband Internet? Your wish is or will be granted! Almighty Google is busy fixing antennae to lampposts in major cities so that your computer can access the Internet much in the same way your mobile phone accesses your cellular network: almost anywhere in any city. Not only will you get driving directions to that restaurant you are going to, the maitre d’ will appear on a small screen and take your order as you drive.

~ Broadband’s Bag of Goodies ~

Broadband has brought a slew of valuable capabilities to the Internet:

1. Good Video

First of all, you can download smooth, non-jerky video. Consequently an increasing number of sites are including rich graphics, Flash and video to enhance the appeal of their messages. You can now download feature films from over 200,000 Web TV stations and watch them as they stream into your computer (”stream them”). No more trips to the video library and no more renting DVDs!

You can share your screen and talk with co-workers located at far-flung locations (or just relax and play Xbox or PS2 games with them). You can interact with them from the convenience of your home computer, and the need for a physical office can be dispensed with. This implies less travel in your car, less gasoline consumption and less pollution of the atmosphere by engine exhaust gases.

You can search online video archives with specialized search engines. This means you can download video that matches your chosen phrases. Examples would be “Nick Lachey singing ‘My Everything’ to Jessica Simpson”, “Oprah visiting Katrina victims” or “how to toss a thin pizza shell”. There is no longer a need to wait for your subject to be broadcast.

2. Cheap Long Distance

Broadband has enabled miracle of low-cost long-distance Internet telephony. This application is based on the renowned technology, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). You can now speak to your loved ones or business associates in most other parts of the world for 2 cents a minute!

No more waiting for late nights or weekends to get those “free minutes”… you can afford to call anytime. Additionally, the sound clarity is several times better than that of a conventional phone call… voices are loud and clear with little or no background noise.

This means you can stay in touch more often. You can get news faster and offer advice without delay. For instance, a timely observation about a certain medical treatment could very well save the life of the person at the other end!

3. Always On

With Broadband, you are always connected to the Internet. No more dialing up and waiting to connect. The dialing time is freed up for you to use for other things.

In most cases, you get a telephone connection with the broadband connection, so you can simultaneously speak on the phone and surf the Internet. Your phone line will not be busy when you surf so that people can reach you even if you are online.

One important user of this constant connectivity is security. You can have inexpensive webcams mounted in various locations of your home or office and connect them to the Internet. Since your broadband connection is always ‘live’, you can monitor your house from anywhere, anytime. No more worrying when away from your desk or living room!

~ Conclusion ~

The day is not far when dial-up connections will be a rarity. If you have not yet upgraded to broadband, start working at doing so NOW. You will definitely not regret it.

Bandwidth Aggregation: Better Safe than Sorry

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Since the internet became a staple in the American home countless surfers have felt the dreaded sting of that one word: “Disconnected.” To some people this means having to wait just a few hours to find their true love or check their email. With the rise of the internet as a business application, however, has come an increased importance on having a reliable internet connection.

Take, for instance, a sales office. Most sales offices now rely on the internet for lead distribution, order processing, order tracking, etc. For a high-volume sales office an hour with a dead internet connection could easily set the company back ten thousand dollars. Other industries also deal with the realities of downtime - how much money could a day-trader lose by not covering his short by the closing bell?

The fact of the matter is that time on the internet is quite literally money for some. Having more of it gives them a competitive advantage and losing some of it results in serious financial losses. As obsessed as most serious business-people are with data redundancy (fact: more paper is consumed per capita in this digital era than at any time preceding the internet), most don’t even consider the potential benefit of having redundant internet access. For many forward-thinking people who actually have a redundant option, they don’t leverage the power of bandwidth aggregation to take advantage of the increased bandwidth.

So what is bandwidth aggregation? It’s a pretty simple concept, actually: simply taking two broadband internet connections (T1, cable, DSL, fiber, etc.) and turning them into one fat connection. You could, for instance, have two DSL lines aggregated. You could also aggregate two different types of broadband - for instance, you could aggregate one T1 connection with one cable connection.

Aggregating two broadband connections gives you more bandwidth, but not necessarily speed. This is where many people get confused. Let’s assume that you have a 3 Mbps DSL connection and you own a small business. This is a pretty fast connection, but you have ten employees and have noticed that at peak times the internet slows down or, in a worst case scenario, won’t work at all for some people. By ordering another 3 Mbps DSL line you will still hit max speeds of 3 Mbps (note that this is a theoretical max that you will almost never hit with ADSL) but you will now have twice the bandwidth. In other words, if five simultaneous connections were feasible before, now you will be able to have ten.

Doubling your bandwidth (also known as your “pipe” or “throughput”) is a great benefit of broadband aggregation, but it’s not the only benefit. When using a broadband aggregator, a router specially designed for load-balancing, you will also immediately have a fail-safe in case one of your internet connections goes down. Obviously the speed will be slower when one of the connections is out (because your bandwidth will be cut in half), but at least you will still be able to perform critical office functions.

Let’s assume that you operate a small company with ten employees and you have a T1 for everyday use. Your T1 is probably pretty reliable, but once or twice a year there is a glitch (like somebody kicking a cable at the ISP) and you lose, on average, two hours a year of internet access. By using a broadband aggregating router and adding a DSL line, when the T1 is out you will still be able to take orders, ship orders out, track orders, check inventory, etc. And if the outage is longer you won’t be running around trying to find a backup data source. Employees might grumble about the slow speeds on the internet, but at least they will be able to get their work done. Also, as an added bonus, you will have more bandwidth for your employees when both internet sources are working.

The benefits of broadband aggregation greatly exceed the costs of not using it for virtually every established business. Broadband aggregation offers the flexibility and reliability for small businesses who cannot afford an expensive, customized IT solution.

Keyword Writing: The Key to Captivating Niche Markets

Monday, June 8th, 2009

In on-line marketing strategies for companies and organizations,
the key to capturing the attention of niche markets is in
keyword writing. Understanding the concept of keyword writing,
which originates in programming language, is essential to
on-line marketing success. A programmer and web site consultant
develop a list of metatags or industry specific keywords when
building a site. They are contained in the ‘back end’ of the
site, which is invisible to viewers. These keywords should
ideally be contained in menu items and in headlines and subheads
on the home page and other pages. Keywords must also be repeated
an infinite number of times in the entire content of the site.
An adept internet marketer will have strategies for repeating
industry keywords on the home page by informing and educating a
reader. How to Identify Keywords Many clients want to know how
to identify keywords for their specific industry. Programmers
use a software program called WordTracker, when they first begin
site construction, to determine keywords. An existing site with
good statistical software such as AWStats, harvests the keywords
visitors used to reach the site on search engines. Both methods
provide a good indicator of basic keywords. This list needs to
be expanded, however, to include niche market keywords and
buzzwords for the industry. Basically the computer computation
of keywords can set a great foundation, but human creativity
also plays a pivotal role here. The question to ask is “What
would my prospects type in to find this site?” Keyword Rich
Article Writing Article writing and posting on the home page of
a web site is one way to invigorate the keyword count on a web
site in an orderly, professional manner. By posting articles on
the web site, a company or organization enhances their standing
in a profession, educates their audience about their product or
services, and provides expert insight and opinion in their
specific industry. Keyword Rich Press Kit A press kit is
another great way to introduce an abundance of keyword rich text
in a web site. Included in the press kit are press releases,
which should also repeat industry and niche market keywords.
Keywords for Niche Markets The most important and creative way
to develop keywords is to combine the industry specific keywords
already researched with keywords for a niche market of choice.
For example, a realtor who sells real estate in New York City
and wants to speak to an audience of Indian professionals
relocating from abroad would develop content which utilizes the
keywords: relocation, Indian and New York City. Developing
articles and press releases with these keywords would also help
to increase the keyword count, and drive Indian professionals
looking to relocate to New York City to the site. Basically, the
formula can be applied to any industry, so long as the major and
fundamental industry keywords are the starting point.
Captivating Niche Markets Niche marketing on-line is easy to
execute, because the search engines are language based.
Successful companies or organizations will recognize the power
of repeating keywords. Their internet marketing strategy will
contain language which speaks directly to the audience which is
most lucrative, and willing to buy their product or service or
join their organization. It’s not enough to capture the
attention of a niche market once or twice. By implementing a
keyword rich niche marketing strategy over a long term, the
traffic driven to a site that is most ‘interesting’ (or peruses
several pages on the site) will begin to return again and again
and are most likely to purchase or join.

How To Shop For Products Online And Save At The Same Time!

Monday, June 8th, 2009

What’s one of the most annoying things that you find when shopping online? One of the most annoying things that I find when shopping online is that when I try to find a product, I have to go to a few sites before I find the product that I am looking for. Once I have found my chosen product, I then have problems comparing this merchants product against other merchants that sell the same product so that I can try to find the best deal for this individual product online.

So if you are also having problems like this when you are also trying to find a product online, then I would personally recommend that you try using some sort of product price comparison search engine/directory. The reasons for this are because these product price comparison search engines/directories list a large amount of products from a large amount of top quality merchants.

By using a product price comparison search engine/directory you can easily find and compare a product of your choice. You can do this by comparing the same product from individual merchants within the same product price comparison search engine/directory that sells the same product so that you can find the best price for your chosen product.

For example, http://www.simplysearch4it.co m offers a product price comparison directory that also includes search facilities so that you can narrow down your search for a product of your choice. This product price comparison directory can be found at http://products.simplyse arch4it.com where it lists over 1,000,000 products and is still growing daily. You can easily find products from garden equipment to housing goods. Within most product price comparison search engines/directories you can also order your results by price so that you can rank the lower priced products first followed by the highest priced products last.

As you can see, from using a product price comparison search engine/directory first, all you have to do is one search for the product that you want to buy and then you should receive a large number of results. Doing it this way is a lot quicker than going to individual merchants sites doing individual searches for the same product. If the product price comparison search engine/directory doesn’t list the product that you are looking for then you can always search through individual merchants sites after using a product price comparison search engine/directory.

Cable or DSL Broadband?

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

I’ve been asked this question so many times I thought I’d put my thoughts down here for you to read. Let’s start by pointing out a couple things first. First off, depending on where you live, you may not have a choice of access. Satellite may be your only choice, which makes this null and void. Don’t fret, satellite is better than any dial-up and the contract lengths are generally 12-14 months in length. It will cost a bit more, given the extra equipment involved, but it certainly beats dial-up (if you can afford it).

Ok, on to the two major broadband access methods, cable and DSL. When I’m asked this question, I usually follow it with questions of my own.

1st. What type of internet surfing do you do? Are you a gamer, shopper, email user, web developer, music downloader, online video watcher, video editor or casual surfer?

2nd. How many computers will you have connected to the internet at one time?

3rd. Do you plan on ‘leveraging’ your broadband investment for home security or VoIP? (Voice over Internet Protocol is a method of making and receiving your phone calls using your broadband connection.)

When making your decision keep in mind that cable access, generally, cost more. The higher cost comes with the benefits of more speed. Up to 6 meg download, or the amount of information you can receive ‘down’ from the internet.

Loading web pages, listening to music online or watching video online are all impacted by your download speed. DSL is about 1.5 meg down in comparison. Not only does this impact ‘your’ surfing behavior, but if you plan to have more than 1 computer access the internet at the same time, keep in mind you’re ’sharing’ this connection. Sharing the connection means sharing that download ‘pipe’. (your internet connection) Uploading to the internet (file attachments in email, uploading web pages, etc. impact your upload speed. Cable upload speeds are around 384K while DSL is around 128K.

If you wish to leverage your investment in broadband by using VoIP, keep in mind that DSL is provided through the copper wires of your phone line. Having VoIP as a primary phone line without local phone service is very, very rare. This type of access is called ‘naked DSL’ and is not very common. We hope this will change in time, but for now, check with your local phone company. If you plan on leveraging your investment, check first.

So the answer to the question Cable or DSL is really all about your usage and what you’re willing to pay. Yes, cable is more expensive but it also comes with the additional benefits of faster speed and the ability to leverage your investment using VoIP as a primary phone service.

Lastly, when I’m asked what I personally use at home? I use cable broadband access and VoIP phone service. I’m very pleased with both and don’t plan on changing any time soon.

If you’re still unsure which is right for you, there are many web sites out there to provide you with additional information. Our site can help you as well so we hope to see you there!

Happy surfing.

Personal Web Hosting - Free Or Cheap?

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

After you have spent some time and creativity on designing your personal web site now it’s time to publish it on the World Wide Web for all to see it.

When coming to web hosting, many face the dilemma of choosing between free or paid web hosting. Although the costs associated with paid web hosting is rather small, it’s still money.

An easy and money free solution might seem to be registering it with a free web-hosting provider. They come in large numbers today and the 10-20 Megs of free personal space they usually offer sounds tempting. Not to mention that some of them even offer POP3 for your e-mail address on their web site or FTP access to your files on the web site.

So it looks like all this is building up to become quite an alternative to spending dear money for almost the same thing. I mean paid web hosting for an individual’s web site sound a little pretentious, doesn’t it?

Sure paid web hosting gives some more space, quite a few more features and all that, but do you need them anyway? You probably just need a web server that can feed .HTML and maybe some simple java scripts to your visitor. It’s not like you are ever going to need an SQL database, support for .ASP or .PHP. You just want your own web site, not an e-commerce solution or you are ever going to need more than one e-mail address for your own use.

A more careful look at the matter is likely to make the right decision easier to take. As a matter of fact, depending on the objectives trusted to your personal web site, the decision between free or cheap almost dictates itself. You should also keep in mind that you actually trusting your virtual image to the web host.

In exchange for the hosting you won’t be asked for money, but there could be banners, hot links, frames, popup windows or other forms of online advertising that will interfere with the content of your web site, possibly having a bad effect on its look and almost certainly annoying your visitors.
Another minus is that your traffic is not likely to attain very high values due to the long domain name. People are not going to return to your web site simply because they forgot its URL. Therefore if people haven’t added your site to their bookmarks, and if your web site is not easily reachable through search engine search or fro other linked sites, it is very likely that your traffic scores would not be very impressive.

A personal web site could be very useful asset in promoting your professional image to potential or actual employers and business contacts. Regardless we are considering the URL or e-mail address, what would an employer for example think when handed a business card with an e-mail address like yourname@freeserver.com. Would you feel comfortable going to a job interview and leaving your resume referring to your online portfolio available at www.yourname.yetanotherfreehost.com? All your effort and skill displayed by your web content would be almost surely hurt by as little as your URL. Not fair, but likely.

A part of the image of successful professionals nowadays is a good personal website. It is well known that success generates success. The look of a personal URL and e-mail such us www.yourname.biz or contact@yourname.com would definitely benefit to your image as a professional. As you were diligent enough to have a personal website, the matter of trusting it to a free web host or investing an additional and usual small amount of money might be the difference of being associated with a success story of your career or with the cliché of a quite all right fellow that is barely struggling and would make compromises even when it comes to its image.

Any problems with the web host, possible downtime, and narrow bandwidth will chase your visitors away and will be associated to your web site.

On the other hand, if your are just stating your experience with the World Wide Web, or if your are setting up a web site with only close friends and relatives as intended audience, a free web host might just do it for you. These are just a few of the examples of having a good reason to publish your web site on a free hosting provider.

Free web hosts helped thousands of people to familiarize themselves with the Internet experience, as first cradles for their web presence. This is one of the reasons free web hosts have contributed to the overall popularity of the Internet. As comfortable as cradles are, you can’t spend your whole life in the cradle!

So, if you are planning to have a web site to represent you online and you want to be taken seriously, to actually enhance your personal image, make right. Make your web site a living proof of your thoroughness and start with your URL.
